Q. Writing a Memoir can be cathartic did you find the writing of Successful to Burn Out emotionally purging for you and the 4 other women if so please share?
A. Seeing my experiences shared by these four women was amazing. I knew in theory that we would share some things – like lessening our responsibilities and eventually crashing – or being burnt out.
What I didn’t know was that we would share other important things. For example being fired for occurring as being unreliable when our mental health challenges came up, or just ‘not being a team player’ (chit chat with other staff).
I felt validated and like some people did understand what I’d been through. That’s why I named the series ‘I’ve been there too darl’ – I wanted other women with Asperger’s to feel acknowledged as well. Something we historically don’t get from medical professionals. They are coming around to the fact that heaps of women are Autistic, as well as males.
Q. What did you edit out of Successful to Burn Out?
A. Early on I realized that the book should be based around working – not friends or family. Those boundaries gave me a wealth of experiences to draw on.
Most of the text was still there from my handwritten draft.
I rewrote sentences and paragraphs at a time. By my third and final draft, the broader themes were still there. I just took out things that weren’t relevant to the themes.
Q. Can you share an example of a time you made a breakthrough?
Listening to the Self-Publishing Podcast – episode 1. I took the information I’d been gathering for years and got serious about writing.
I created timesheets and logged my writing hours, wrote an overall self-publishing business plan including side projects I could try, wrote a design brief for the book covers, and finally used my Pomorado app and got to work.
I knew after the first week that I couldn’t work for more than a few hours at a time, for more than two days in a row. So I had to regularly recreate acceptance and forgiveness that I still couldn’t work full time.
Seeing how many hours I logged (19 hours for the first draft and 70 hours for the second) was a real boost to my confidence. I no longer felt totally unreliable. I began to trust that I could work on something for a few months until the end.
Q. Does writing energize or exhaust you?
A. I like mapping out drafts, love the freeform writing after that and don’t like editing much.
The hardest part is the first 20-30 minutes of working. I find it extremely hard to stay focused. My mind constantly shoots up irrelevant thoughts. Once I’m in the flow of things it’s really hard to take my timed breaks. All I want to do is keep writing!
Q. What was an experience where you learned that language had power?
A. I did a couple of communication courses in my twenties. Realizing that words create worlds for you and other people – experiences, feelings, memories, assumptions – was pretty powerful.
I became even more articulate and straight forward after that. I definitely chose my words even more carefully.
Q. Describe for our readers how you are succeeding with Autism?
My ability to see patterns has meant that I can link different experiences together in a broader context – very helpful for writing nonfiction books!
Successful to Burnt Out is my fourth eBook, and I credit them all with my ability to see patterns.

Autistic Burn Out is otherwise known as becoming non-functioning in everyday life. It is sometimes related to Autistic regression, and being utterly worn out from social anxiety and social exhaustion.
Successful to Burnt Out is part of a broader series of coming eBooks in the ‘I’ve been there too Darl’ series. The series is about myself and other adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Successful to Burnt Out features five women who’ve considered ourselves successful in our primary role. We’ve had to slow down or stop working.
Some of us didn’t know why life became exponentially harder. Why we had burnt out.
Some of us realized our limitations and could also put names to them. Anxiety. Depression. Late in life, we found out it was also from being on the Autism Spectrum.
